Teeth whitening in LA: what works, what's hype, what it costs
Whitening is the gateway drug of cosmetic dentistry, cheap enough to try, visible enough to love. Here's the honest map of the options in Los Angeles.
In-office whitening: $250 to $800
Zoom, laser, LED, the brand matters less than the chemistry: high-concentration peroxide applied with your gums protected, done in about an hour. Expect 3 to 8 shades of improvement in one visit and 24 hours of avoiding coffee, red wine and turmeric. This is the option for deadlines; Hollywood and West Hollywood offices book these before shoots and weddings constantly.
Custom take-home trays: $150 to $350
The quiet best-value option. The office molds trays to your teeth and hands you professional-strength gel; you wear them nightly for one to two weeks. Slower, gentler, and re-usable, a $30 gel refill next year re-whitens for the cost of lunch.
Drugstore strips: $25 to $60
They work, mildly, one to three shades on the front teeth they manage to cover. Fine for a subtle refresh; frustrating for crooked teeth (strips can't follow the curves, so you whiten in stripes).
What's hype
Charcoal powders and "purple toothpaste" either abrade enamel or tint it temporarily, neither bleaches. UV/LED home kits get their tiny results from the gel, not the light. If it sounds like physics homework, it's marketing.
Who shouldn't whiten (yet)
Whitening only touches natural enamel, crowns, veneers and bonding don't change color, so whitening around them creates mismatches. Untreated cavities plus bleach equals real pain. And if your teeth are already sensitive, tell the office; they'll pretreat with desensitizer or steer you to trays.
The right order of operations is always: exam first, whiten second, and any bonding or veneer color-matching last, after your enamel has settled at its new shade for two weeks. Compare whitening providers across LA, prices differ more than results do.
